Music and Culture

Recommended cultural events

Vienna's reputation as the city of music and culture is well-deserved. The choice of musical events is enormous, and much of it is of world class level. Getting tickets for performances, however, can be a nightmare, and agents are known to charge anything between 25% and 300% comission on the ticket price. Getting tickets directly from the source is extremely hard and sometimes requires standing in line for hours early in the morning a month prior to the performance you wish to see. The local organizing committee is dedicated to making your stay in Vienna memorable, but there are certain things even we won't do...

Among the byzantine world of Vienna ticket agents, we have located one agency, Kartenbüro Jirsa, with an excellent web interface and reasonable comissions. It offers tickets for most cultural events in Vienna and surroundings, which can be booked through its website:

To help you find the events that suit you best, we have selected a few recommended performances and included our comments about each performance. You can either follow the links to book tickets for those performances from Kartenbüro Jirsa, or try to book directly from the organizers where possible if you prefer to avoid paying comissions.

Vienna Imperial Orchestra

Vienna Imperial Orchestra - Vienna has a flurry of "tourist" concerts where popular classical tunes by Mozart and Johann Strauss are played in grandiose locations by sometimes mediocre musicians wearing wigs and eighteenth century costumes. If you would like to hear these catchy tunes in a slightly less grandiose setting, but played by decent musicians (some of which also play for the Vienna Symphonic Orchestra), then the Vienna Imperial Orchestra, playing at 20:15 in the Imperialsaal, is the right choice for you.
